Windows

Many of our customers come to us wanting to add character to their property or sometimes even wish to replace like for like, historic listed building-style windows.

For these, and all of our customers, we are always flexible in designing and building the vision they wish to create.

We are able to add in Transoms or Mullions wherever you wish in order to create a true Georgian or Cottage style window. You can then either have individual sealed units and a bar width of approximately 45mm or 20mm dummy bars and a single larger unit.

Arched heads are also available, and can be made to suit the Window design you require. Select a window style below to find out more..

Hinges

There are a variety of hinges on offer, all of which Catton Windows fit as standard depending on the style of window. Butt hinges are predominantly used on our more traditional applications, while friction hinges allow the window to be opened and closed without the need for peg stays.

Friction stays are also ideal if you need to incorporate restrictors for safety purposes; as well as egress for strict building regulations on fire escapes.

Mouldings

To complete the overall look of our windows a moulding is used in various places around the window to give a decorative but streamlined look. These mouldings can vary but generally the main two styles are Ovolo and Chamfered. We are however more than willing and able to match existing, conservation or historic windows. Please click here to be taken to the mouldings gallery for inspiration.

Finer Details

As well as choosing the basic style of window it is also important to consider any other features required. These are often in the form of bars or splits in the sash/vent.

Generally two types of splits are available; Astragal Bars or Georgian Bars.

An astragal bar is applied over the top of a duplex (plastic) bar built into the glass sealed unit. This is usually a 20mm thick bar made to match the moulding of the window. Astragal bars are particularly popular when trying to match or copy an older single glazed window where they have very thin Georgian bars. You can create as many bars as you wish; however we find the most popular designs are the cottage or the Georgian grid.

A Georgian Bar is a solid bar built into the vent or frame allowing for individual sealed units to be installed. Again usually cottage or Georgian grid styles are constructed however it is up to the client how many bars and where they should go. The standard size for a Georgian bar is 42mm.

We also offer a whole host of bevels, stains and lead options. Sand blasting of glass is also an ever popular method or making you home stand out from the rest.

Casement type

Catton Windows offer three main types of windows; stormproof casement, flush casement and sliding casement.

Flush casement takes its name from the look. The sashes/vents all sit flat and flush within the window frame. Stormproof casement’s sashes/vents overlap the frame to sit proud. Sliding casement windows are windows with two casements which slide independently, overlapping one another; often with the use of weights or in more recent times with the use of spiral balances.

All windows are available in various configurations in terms of hinges, furniture etc. The flush casement variant is also available in a conservation form. This enables us to meet with the approval of local authorities where properties which are listed, or fall under conservation rules, can have slimmer sections.

Locking

Locking systems on windows have become more advanced over the years. Here at Catton Windows we recognise this and as standard all our windows come with high quality multipoint locking systems.

We also appreciate that some of our clients may wish to have a more traditional system, perhaps more in keeping with their property and opt for cock spur locking and peg stays.

We are happy to supply either and will explain the options every step of the way.

Catton Windows offers a suited standard range of hardware for Sash Windows. Available in satin chrome, polished chrome, gold or white.

We only use Secure by Design lockable Fitch fasteners. Ring pulls and sash lifts are used where required for ease of use.

Traditional Joinery

The Sash window frame is expertly constructed using traditional mortise and tenon methods. A traditional hardwood staff bead is then used to compliment the inside of the frame.

When removing old Sash Windows we can move over to the spiral balance version by carefully and sympathetically filling in the old weight chambers and installing new decorative reveals. This allows us to retain the appearance of a traditional sash window to match the previous sash. This has great benefits with regard to cost; as well as ease of use and maintenance.

Mr & Mrs Erpingham

"Many thanks for another excellent job by your craftsmen - it was worth waiting for. We are very pleased we decided to 'go green' as it makes a very attractive contrast with the white windows and red bricks."

Mr & Mrs S, Wymondham

Mr & Mrs H, Old Costessey

Mr & Mrs R, Wood Dalling

"I would like to say how impressed we were with the quality of the hardwood windows that have just been fitted in our house. Everyone who has seen them is knocked out at how good they look. I was personally taken with the qulity of the paint/stain finishes - they almost look 'too good' for our house. This is the 3rd job Catton has done for us - two previous conservatories - all of which came up to the same standard."
